About Us Franklin | Chosun Black Belt Academy

Welcome

Welcome to the Chosun Black Belt Academy of Tae Kwon Do! Our Academy is excited in your interest in our school, in addition to the possibility that you might decide to be a part of our mission. This mission is for each of our students to become a better person, and by becoming better people we become a better community, which extends to the world as a whole, making our world a better place simply because we have lived here. Martial arts directs us to the path to freedom from normal human limitations. Each of us has within us the ability to become better physically, mentally and spiritually. Chosun Black Belt Academy, like the era of Korean history after which we are named, is a traditional school meeting a modern world. We are committed to students learning the tradition of Korean Tae Kwon Do, while at the same time training them with the most modern methods. We would like to help students realize their own inner strength, helping them to become better children, husbands and wives at home, more productive participants at school and work, and more prolific citizens of society. Students improve various areas of their lives by participating in activities that help to build a healthier body and a stronger mind. Accept the challenge within you. Become a better person. Become a Black Belt!

About Us Franklin | Chosun Black Belt Academy
Master Joseph Peterson - Cho Sun BBA
Master Joseph Peterson - Cho Sun BBA

Head Instructor, Grandmaster Joseph Peterson -

I have been teaching the art of Tae Kwon Do since 1994 throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. I started training in Tae Kwon do as a teenager in order to learn self-defense, as I am not shy to say, I was a huge fan of the old-time “Kung Fu Theater” and similar programs of its likeness. What I quickly found out was that this activity was helping me to feel more confident about myself. My self-esteem was much better, and I started to feel strong as an individual. I continued my training throughout college at Northern Illinois University, which is when I discovered my love for teaching. By the time I had finished college I was in charge of teaching a campus Tae Kwon Do club as well as a University-accredited Tae Kwon Do course. I finished college with a teaching degree in secondary education and immediately began my apprenticeship for instructing Tae Kwon Do. I have been teaching Tae Kwon Do fulltime throughout the Northern Illinois (most specifically Rockford) and southern Wisconsin (Beloit, Janesville) areas since that time.

I have continued to study in Tae Kwon Do throughout my life, as well as RyuKyu Kempo and Kyushojitsu. In 2018, I travelled back to Korea and had the honor of being promoted to the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt. Although I have received the title of “Grandmaster” in Tae Kwon Do, I will always see myself as a “student” of the arts first and foremost.

I am very fortunate and happy to have such wonderful, dedicated students at Chosun Black Belt Academy. I look forward to continuing to study martial arts and pass on my knowledge to those that would care to study along with me. By teaching I have become a much better student. By continuing to train, I have realized how much I have to learn. Remember to always train and seek knowledge with the enthusiasm of a White Belt. For those who teach or would like to teach, remember, as a wise teacher once said, “If you would like to keep what I have taught you, give it to others.”

Sahbumnim Michelle Peterson -

Mrs. Peterson is a 4th Degree Black Belt who has been studying TKD since 2000. She originally got into TKD for fitness and found out that it offered a whole lot more. She loves learning the self-defense aspects as it helps her feel more confident in being safe on the streets. She truly enjoys teaching so that she can help others succeed as well.

Favorite kick? Her favorite kick is the 360 Back Kick.

Accomplishments in TKD? One of her most memorable accomplishments was attending (and surviving) two seminars with Olympic and World Champion, Master Kuk Hyun Jung.

Future goals in TKD? Mrs. Peterson would love to continue training so that she can someday become a Master of the art.

Hobbies, outside interests? Mrs. Peterson loves spending time with her four children, Kai Young Soon, Duncan, Gia and Cael. She also loves cooking, gymnastics, photography, scuba diving, swimming, reading, crafts, and spending time with family…… and did she mention that she loves to spend time with her kids?

Any mottos or philosophy of life? Loyalty is the best investment.

Advice to beginning students? Keep in mind every high rank was a white belt when they started. It is not easy to stick things out and become a black belt, but if you prioritize your training in your life…it is possible!

Sahbumnim Sandy Haberichter -

Mrs. Haberichter is a 4th Degree Black Belt originally from Milwaukee. She got into TKD in 2004 because her son, Hunter, was in it and she thought it looked like fun. Her husband, Eric and two sons are also TKD Black Belts. Mrs. Haberichter is a very dedicated and detailed Instructor.

What is your favorite part of studying martial arts? I love getting a great workout, learning practical material such as self-defense, and also being part of a family-oriented school.

What is your favorite part of teaching? I love seeing students progressively become more coordinated and have more self-confidence.

Favorite kick? 360 Back Kick.

Best accomplishment in TKD so far? Earning my 1st degree and continuing to train

Future goals for TKD/martial arts training? My long-term goal is to never stop training in TKD.

Misc info: My career interest is in investigating the molecular and cellular biology of von Willebrand disease. My hobbies include fishing, hunting, hiking, running, biking, and reading.

Any mottos or philosophy of life? You can achieve anything; set goals and stay on the path.

Advice to beginning students? Just keep trying. Since you get to line up in the back of the class, you get the opportunity to watch higher belts, and no one is watching you. Everyone in the class was a white belt at one time.

Instructor Eric Haberichter -

Mr. Haberichter is a 1st Degree Black Belt from Greenfield who has been studying TKD since 2004. His wife, Sandy and two sons are also in TKD. Mr. Haberichter is a very animated, fun Instructor.

Why did you start in TKD? I had an interest since childhood. I was a Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris fan, and also had friends that did Karate and Judo. I thought it would be good exercise and that it would be structured, something I’d stick with.

What is your favorite part of studying martial arts? I really enjoy the exercise and challenge. I enjoy self-defense, sparring and bunkai (Form application). Besides the physical aspect of training I enjoy being a student. When I am in TKD class I can allow myself to relax by giving in to the structure of the class. I am totally focused in training and everything else disappears; for me it’s the most relaxing thing I do.

What is your favorite part of teaching? I have two favorites. First, I enjoy working with the kids because they always remind me of just how much I don’t know, and second, I enjoy teaching/learning with the other adults. I definitely learn a great deal while teaching. I especially enjoy teaching self-defense and working one on one with other students.

Favorite kick? Jump Spin Crescent.

Best accomplishment in TKD so far? Dedicated training since 2004; I believe that staying with it is the real key to success.

Future goals for TKD/martial arts training? Mid term- improve flexibility, cardio-training, sparring. Long term- 2nd Degree Black Belt.

Misc info: I enjoy outdoor activities with my family. We camp, hike, swim, fish and hunt. I especially enjoy archery. I consider myself a “lucky Wisconsinite” because I enjoy being outside almost every day of the year. I have founded and run several companies in the healthcare industry (i.e. Smart Choice MRI, Access Healthnet). I am absolutely dedicated to lowering healthcare costs.

Any mottos or philosophy of life? You make your own future, make it a good one.

Advice to beginning students? Stick with it. You owe it to yourself to work hard and get past a few challenges. People who accomplish great things in martial arts and in life had to do things that were hard; only by challenging yourself can you reach your full potential.

Sahbumnim Tonya Osterberg-

Mrs. Osterberg is a 4th degree Black Belt who has been in Tae Kwon Do since 2009 and her son Jacob is also is Tae Kwon Do. She is originally from Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Why did you start TKD? It is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I also joined to gain self-confidence and exercise.

What is your favorite part of studying the martial arts? Surprising myself by what I can accomplish! I also love the gymnastic component of Martial Arts.

What is your favorite part of teaching? I love to watch the look on the students’ faces when they learn something new.

Favorite Kick? Blindfolded Jump Reverse Hook Kick

Best accomplishment in TKD so far? Completing my 3rd degree Black Belt test with a brick break

Future goals for TKD/martial arts training? Master Instructor

Misc info: I enjoy running, yoga and spending time with my two children.

Motto/philosophy of life? Stay positive, don’t sweat the small stuff.

Advice to beginning students? Stick with it! Don’t look too far ahead, keep your mind focused on where you are.

Sahbumnim Chellie Beaudot -

Mrs. Beaudot is a 3rd degree Black Belt from Milwaukee who has been in Tae Kwon Do since 2010.

Why did you start TKD? My daughters are both students and I thought it would be fun to learn what they were learning.

What is your favorite part of studying martial arts? Allowing myself to become singularly focused, mind and body, on the lesson that is being taught.

What is your favorite part of teaching? Watching the joy on the students faces as they learn and then master new techniques.

Favorite kick? Flying side kick

Best accomplishment so far in TKD? Learning to glance at the horizon to get my bearings, but to keep my focus in the moment.

Future goals for martial arts training? To still be learning and practicing when I am very, very old.

Misc. interests? I like learning new languages, reading, exercising, baking and making greeting cards.
Any mottos or philosophies? Team work makes the dream work.

Any advice for beginning students? Ask for help when you need it. Our school is full of people willing to spend time sharing their knowledge and ability.

Sahbumnim David Van Ert -

Mr. Van Ert is a 3rd degree Black Belt from Milwaukee who started Tae Kwon Do at the young age of 6 back in 2007. Mr. Van Ert started learning how to teach through the Chosun S.T.O.R.M. program, a leadership skills Instructor program that mentors young students on how to pass on skills to others through teaching. He uses his experience of many years as a student in the children’s class to help connect with the students that he teaches. Mr. Van Ert has also spent many years on the Chosun Demo team and regularly assists in many of the Chosun Academy activities.

Instructor Traci Beaudot -

Mrs. Traci Beaudot is a 3rd Degree Black Belt who has been with Chosun studying TKD since 2010. She originally got into TKD as the last family member of four to join from Master Peterson’s famous parent offers.

Favorite kick? Her favorite kick is the 360 Back Kick.

Best accomplishment so far in TKD? Completing 2nd Degree test with no other candidates.

What is your favorite part of studying martial arts? She loves working out with some really fantastic people – both adults and kids whether teaching or participating in class herself.

What is your favorite part of teaching? She loves learning from both the older and the younger students while she is teaching. TKD offers the opportunity to grow not only in the art itself but also in our lives. We learn how to be good partners, how to encourage each other, and to be okay with our strengths and weaknesses.

Future goals in TKD? Mrs. Traci Beaudot continues to train to be an example to other students to continue to get up after falling down.

Hobbies, outside interests? Mrs. Traci Beaudot loves spending time with her family. She also loves spending time outside anyway she can. She can be found out in her yard even if it is raining or helping shoveling snow away from the dojang door.

Any mottos or philosophy of life? Begin as you mean to go on. If want be a great black
belt you must first be a great white belt.

Advice to beginning students? You are capable of being what you want. Keep trying.

Instructor Andi Matusiak -

Mrs. Matusiak is a 3rd degree Black Belt from Greenfield who has been in Tae Kwon Do since 2012. She began training about a year after her son started in the Little Ninja program. She eventually earned her Black Belt and started teaching, using many years of Cheer coaching to her advantage in working with the young students of Chosun. Mrs. Matusiak has also been joined by her father, making it a 3-generation activity. She likes working with the sais and training students on the Chosun Demo Team.

Why did you start TKD? My husband and I had started my son when he was 4 to socialize him before beginning school. After a year of helping him train, Master Peterson finally convinced me to step onto the training floor.

What is your favorite part of studying the martial arts? Learning that sometimes thing are not always what they seem to be and that there is always something more behind everything we do

What is your favorite part of teaching? Seeing the student that has struggled or felt like they don’t belong, they do the smallest thing to bring a smile to their face and they feel so proud of themselves

Favorite Kick? Reverse Hook Kick

Best accomplishment in TKD so far? Having Taekwondo to share with my son and my father. There have been so many moments that I will cherish all my life

Future goals for TKD/martial arts training? To continue to challenge myself both physically and mentally that age is just a number

Misc info: Enjoys music, acting, theater, competing in TKD tournaments throughout SE Wisconsin, LOVES anything sparkly!

Motto/philosophy of life? You are stronger than you think. Don’t let your inner voice of doubt ever deny you the experience of falling and getting back up.

Advice to beginning students? You’ll be surprised on what you can accomplish just by stepping out on the training floor
